This zine was created in September 2025 in response to the Hong Kong government's March 2025 announcement to phase out bamboo scaffolding in favor of steel on at least half of all new public construction projects. Photos are drawn from my personal archive, with one or two contributions from friends based in Hong Kong. Shortly after completing the zine, the deadly Tai Po fires occurred. The government and foreign media attributed the fire to bamboo scaffolding, which many believe was scapegoating to advance the steel scaffolding agenda. Critics also called out foreign media for falling into reductive racist stereotypes.
